Introduction
As a former investment banker, I’ve engineered a bunch of recipes designed to be quick, tasty, and healthy, and this Korean Ground Beef is one of those meals that I created when I wanted something fast but still super delicious. This Korean Ground Beef reminds me of those quick beef bowls I’d pick up at the Asian grocery store on the way back from work, but instead it’s fresh, tastier, and healthier! I will admit, I make a lot of quick beef dishes, but this one stands out because of how complex the sauce is and how everything can be made in only one pan!
What I love the most about this Korean Ground Beef Recipe is how practical it is! You get such a flavorful dish in under 20 minutes, and this recipe was designed to be served over rice, veggies, or even with noodles. It’s honestly one of the easiest ways to get in a high protein meal without overthinking!
Why You’ll Love This Korean Ground Beef Recipe
This Korean Ground Beef Recipe is perfect for those busy weeknights because it checks very box you need for a dinner. It’s fast, uses pantry staples (at least the ones you can find at the bottom of this page), and doesn’t require any complicated preparation or marinating. Everything is made in one pan, which also makes the cleanup just as easy as the cooking itself! Whenever you find yourself deciding between takeout or cooking, this is the kind of recipe that makes staying in feel like the better option!

What Makes This Korean Ground Beef Recipe So Good
The key to making this Korean Ground Beef Recipe is how you build flavor in each step of the recipe. You should let the beef sit at the beginning (I know it’s hard to leave it alone when you hear that sizzle!) to create a proper sear, which not only adds depth of flavor, but also helps lock in the beef juices. This step alone adds that restaurant quality flavor!
The flavor in this Korean Ground Beef Recipe is really where the dish shines and comes from such simple ingredients. Gochujang alone brings that signature Korean spice, sweetness, and umami. The combination of dark soy sauce and light soy sauce gives the sauce both that deep, rich color and salt, while the sugar helps round out the sauce’s sharp taste profile and helps the sauce cling to the beef. Finally, the sesame oil added at the end gives this Korean Ground Beef Recipe that nutty flavor that completes the entire dish.
In this Korean Ground Beef Recipe, every ingredient plays a key role in helping create a dish that tastes much more complex than it really is!
Korean Ground Beef Recipe Ingredients
You only need a handful of ingredients to make this Korean Ground Beef Recipe, which are all laid out below!
Ground beef – This is the base of this Korean Ground Beef Recipe. Using ground beef is quick, easy, and gives the dish great flavor and protein!
Garlic – Adds another layer of aromatic flavor. It’s the first ingredient in the pan and makes the dish smell incredible right from the start!
Gochujang – The heart of the sauce and the base of a lot of Korean recipes. It brings spice, sweetness, and umami all in one ingredient, which is what gives this Korean Ground Beef Recipe its signature flavor.
Dark soy sauce & Light soy sauce – Both of these provide the main seasoning and salt for the dish and gives the Korean Ground Beef a deeper and more umami flavor.
Sesame oil – Adds a nutty aroma that rounds the whole dish out and gives the dish that classic Korean BBQ flavor.
Sugar – Helps balance the salt and spice while also helping the sauce thicken and really stick to the beef.
Rice – Optional, but it creates the perfect base for soaking up all the sauce from the beef and makes this a complete dish!
Fried egg – Optional, but it adds extra protein, and the creamy yolk compliments the beef and rice.
How to Make Korean Ground Beef
Add oil to a pan over medium heat and cook the minced garlic until fragrant.

Add the ground beef and break it apart, then let it sit undisturbed for a couple of minutes to develop a good sear. Continue cooking the beef until it is mostly browned and slightly crispy in spots.

Add gochujang, dark soy sauce, light soy sauce, sesame oil, and sugar, then mix everything together. Continue to cook until the sauce thickens and fully coats the beef.

Remove from heat and serve over a bowl of rice.

Top with sesame seeds, scallions, and a fried egg if desired.

What to Serve with Korean Ground Beef
The first optional ingredient you should serve this Korean Ground Beef Recipe with is a simple bowl of white rice because it soaks up the sauce perfectly. However, you can also add a couple extra components to build this Korean Ground Beef into a more complete meal (I’m taking to all the veggie lovers out there!).
To contrast the richness of the beef, feel free to add something fresh or slightly more acidic on the side like kimchi or thinly sliced cucumbers. I personally like to use thinly sliced cucumbers because it adds a fresh bite to each bite of beef. I’ve also tested this recipe with sauteed vegetables too, and I’ve found that vegetables like spinach and bean sprouts work best when sauteed quickly and served on the side.
This Korean Ground Beef Recipe also is the perfect base for lettuce wraps if you want to skip on the rice and keep it low carb! My dad likes to sprinkle peanuts over the top when he eats these in a lettuce cup. If you’re not a fan of rice, you can add noodles to make Korean Ground Beef noodles! If you’re a big fan of the noodle idea, you can also try my Garlic Beef Noodles recipe, which is also delicious!
How to Store Korean Ground Beef For Meal Prep
This Korean Ground Beef Recipe is one of the best dishes for meal prep and stores very well. I usually like to keep the beef and rice in separate containers, so the rice doesn’t get too soggy from the sauce. When reheating, make sure to microwave both the beef and rice with a damp paper towel to prevent everything from drying out. If the beef looks a little bit thick (it sometimes will because it’s been sitting in the fridge), you can add a small splash of water before reheating to help loosen up the sauce.
Regardless if you make it with rice, lettuce cups, or noodles, storing I’ve found that storing the beef separately in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the fridge helps preserve the flavors the best.
Korean Ground Beef Substitutions
One of the best things about this Korean Ground Beef Recipe is how flexible it is. I’ve made this dish for my parents multiple times, and they request that I swap the ground beef for ground turkey or chicken, and it tastes super similar! If you don’t have gochujang, you can also add a chili paste like sriracha with a touch of sugar and a pinch of salt. Even though the flavor will be slightly different, you still get those spicy, salty, and sweet notes you would find if you added gochujang.
As stated before, you can also add any vegetable of your choice like spinach, bean sprouts, broccoli, or even frozen mixed veggies! It’s one of those recipes that you can adjust based on what you have, and it’ll still turn out amazing!
