Introduction
A part of growing up that people don’t tell you is figuring out what to make for dinner with ground beef, and this Bulgogi Ground Beef Recipe is one of the easiest answers to that problem. This recipe takes inspiration from the classic Korean Bulgogi but simplifies it into something that you can make in under 15 minutes with ingredients you can commonly find in your pantry. If your normal ground beef with salt and pepper is starting to feel repetitive, this Bulgogi Ground Beef Recipe completely changes that with a super flavorful sauce that makes every bite a real treat. It’s quick, high in protein, and perfect over rice, which makes it one of the most practical meals that you can keep in the weeknight rotation.
How This Bulgogi Ground Beef Recipe Builds Flavor Fast
This Bulgogi Ground Beef Recipe was designed to maximize the flavor of the beef without adding any extra steps or finding hard-to-find ingredients. Instead of the traditional marinating step, everything is cooked directly in the pan, which both saves time and builds a similar flavor. Ground beef is one of the best proteins to use in this recipe because of its surface area. It develops those caramelized browned bits that adds that classic KBBQ flavor once the sauce is added.

Why The Sauce Is So Important For This Bulgogi Ground Beef Recipe
The sauce is the most important part because it not only flavors the dish, but it also replaces the marinating step and gives the ground beef that signature flavor. Cooking the garlic and ginger is a small step, but it infuses the oil and creates a strong flavor base that helps give the whole dish that signature bulgogi flavor. In the sauce, the combination of dark and light soy sauce provides both saltiness and umami while the shaoxing wine, although not traditional, adds another aromatic flavor that enhances that beefy flavor. As the sauce reduces, it coats every bit of beef. It’s simple, but every ingredient plays a key role in building a dish that’s easy, healthy, and on the table in less than 15 minutes.
Bulgogi Ground Beef Recipe Ingredients
Ground beef – The main protein of the dish. It cooks quickly, is convenient, and develops flavor as it browns in the pan.
Garlic + ginger – These form the aromatic base and give the beef the main flavor. Garlic brings its classic flavor, while the ginger adds a subtle warmth and brightness that is traditionally found in traditional Bulgogi Beef.
Sauce (dark soy sauce, light soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, sesame oil, brown sugar) – A crucial mix that seasons the beef, adds umami flavor, and coats everything with a savory, slightly sweet flavor profile.
Steamed rice + garnishes – The perfect way to serve this Bulgogi Ground Beef Recipe. The rice absorbs the sauce while the sesame seeds, scallions, and a fried egg add texture, color, and richness that compliments the bulgogi perfectly.
How to Make Bulgogi Ground Beef
Heat a pan over medium heat with oil and cook the garlic and ginger until fragrant.

Add the ground beef and break it apart, letting it cook until mostly browned.

Pour in the sauce and stir well to combine. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens and coats the beef evenly.

Remove from heat and serve immediately over rice. Top with sesame seeds, scallions, and a fried egg if desired.

What to Serve with Bulgogi Ground Beef
This Bulgogi Ground Beef Recipe is best served over a bowl of steamed white rice, but if you want any additional components, here are a few of my favorites:
- Green leaf lettuce salad. I like to toss some green leaf lettuce leaves with some rice vinegar, salt, and a pinch of sugar to create a vinegary side that balances the beef’s richness.
- Sliced cucumbers. This is the simplest and easiest way to add a bite of freshness that balances the dish.
- Kimchi. The acidity and sourness of kimchi also compliment the beef and is traditionally eaten with Beef Bulgogi.
How to Store Bulgogi Ground Beef
This Bulgogi Ground Beef Recipe can be stored super easily, which also makes it great for storing for meal prep. You can keep it in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the fridge, and there are a few options you can store it:
- By itself. You can store the beef by itself and reheat in a microwave by itself before placing over fresh rice. This is also the easiest method to store if you want to reheat the meat in the pan.
- On top of rice. If you place on top of rice, microwave the entire Tupperware for 2 minutes on high heat.
Bulgogi Ground Beef Substitutions
This Bulgogi Ground Beef Recipe is very flexible, and you can substitute some ingredients depending on whatever you have in the fridge. A few of my favorite substitutions are:
- Ground chicken or turkey. These are great alternate proteins that still have a great surface area and absorb the sauce very well.
- Honey. This is a great substitute for brown sugar that still helps reduce and caramelize the sauce.
- Omit Shaoxing Wine. You can omit the Shaoxing wine or substitute with a small splash of water to keep the sauce’s consistency the same.
